Pets are not just animals meant to be picked up at the local dog park. In fact, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, most pets live longer than humans. A pet, or domesticated animal, is generally kept primarily for the person’s pleasure or business rather than for a strictly functional living animal, such as a sheep or horse, as a laboratory animal or livestock, or as a hunting or raccoon-killing animal. Some pets may be taken for walks, but most are kept inside with their owners. Some pets may be indoor pets, some may be outdoor pets, and some may even be exotic pets, meaning they are kept in captivity and not available for adoption.
